How Long Does De-Oiled Rose Water Last?
Does rose water really stay fresh for years? Prof. Dr. Hasan Baydar’s work on traditional rose water and Akita’s laboratory stability testing show why the answer begins with a more important question: What kind of rose water are we talking about?
You pick up a bottle of rose water. The label says “100% natural,” “pure rose water,” or “Rosa damascena rose water.”
But how long will it actually last?
Six months? One year? Two years?
And if it contains no preservative, how can it remain stable for an extended period of time?
There is no single answer, because not every product sold as “rose water” is made in the same way.
To understand shelf life, we first need to understand how the rose water was produced—and whether the rose oil was removed during production.
First, How Is Traditional Rose Water Produced?
Traditional rose water is closely connected to rose oil production.
In his work Oil-Bearing Rose Cultivation and Industry, Prof. Dr. Hasan Baydar of Süleyman Demirel University describes the industrial distillation of Rosa damascena in detail.
Fresh rose flowers are distilled with water. During distillation, volatile compounds are carried with the steam and then condensed.
In industrial rose oil production, the oily distillate is collected and the rose oil is separated. The water remaining beneath the first oil is then distilled again to recover additional rose oil, known as the “second oil” or “water oil.”
Baydar explains that the aromatic water collected beneath the rose oil after this second distillation is used as rose water.
This distinction matters.
In this traditional process, rose water is closely linked to the production and separation of rose oil.
And that brings us to the question of shelf life.
Does Traditional De-Oiled Rose Water Spoil?
According to Prof. Dr. Hasan Baydar, it can.
His text makes a particularly important observation: rose water may spoil or become sour in a relatively short time if it is not stored properly.
He also identifies light, heat and air as factors that accelerate deterioration. For this reason, he recommends keeping rose water in containers with minimal air exposure and storing it in a cool, dark environment.
There is another interesting point.
Although rose water has antimicrobial activity, Baydar notes that certain bacteria can still cause it to deteriorate.
So the common assumption that:
“Rose water is natural, therefore it cannot spoil”
is not supported by this source.
Natural does not automatically mean indefinitely stable.
How Can the Shelf Life of Rose Water Be Extended?
Baydar discusses several approaches.
He states that UV treatment and pasteurization can be effective for reducing bacterial contamination in rose water.
He also notes that chemical preservatives such as 2-phenoxyethanol or sodium benzoate may be added, at the levels described in his text, to extend shelf life.
This is useful information for consumers because two bottles sitting next to each other on a store shelf may both say “rose water,” while being very different products.
Their production methods, composition, preservation systems and stability may not be the same.
That is why words such as “natural,” “pure” and “authentic” on the front label do not tell the whole story.
What Makes Akita Rose Water Different?
This is where an important distinction needs to be made.
Akita Non-De-Oiled Rose Water is produced using a different approach: the rose oil is not separated from the rose water during production.
The purpose is not to extract rose oil first and then use the remaining aromatic water as rose water.
Instead, Akita's process is designed to produce a whole rose distillate without separating the naturally occurring rose oil from the water.
But this naturally raises another question:
If the rose oil is not removed and preservatives are not added, can the product remain stable?
Rather than answering that question with a marketing claim, we can look at the laboratory data.
Akita Rose Water Was Put Through a Stability Test
A stability analysis of Akita Rose Water was conducted by Bilim Cosmetic and Industrial Product Analysis Laboratory.
The analysis report is dated January 17, 2019. Testing began on October 11, 2018 and was completed on January 16, 2019.
The samples were not kept under only one ideal storage condition.
They were evaluated under several conditions, including:
- room temperature with daylight,
- room temperature in the dark,
- 4°C (39.2°F),
- 45°C (113°F).
Measurements were taken during the study, including on Days 1, 28 and 90.
The 45°C condition is particularly noteworthy because the product was not evaluated only under cool storage conditions. Its stability was also assessed under elevated temperature.
What Happened After 90 Days?
The microbiological results are one of the most important parts of the report.
Across the reported test conditions, the laboratory recorded:
Total aerobic count:<10 CFU/g
Yeast and mould:<10 CFU/g
The following microorganisms were also reported as not detected:
- Candida albicans
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Escherichia coli
- Staphylococcus aureus
Importantly, the report shows the same microbiological findings at Day 90 under the 45°C condition: total aerobic count and yeast and mould remained below 10 CFU/g, while the specified microorganisms were not detected.
This gives us something more useful than simply saying that the product “lasts a long time.”
It provides laboratory data showing how the tested Akita Rose Water samples behaved under defined conditions over the 90-day study period.
What About pH and Density?
The stability report also includes physical and chemical measurements.
The initial reported pH was approximately 3.87. At Day 90 under the 45°C condition, the reported pH was 3.83.
Density was reported at 0.99 g/cm³.
Within this particular test, therefore, the reported pH remained relatively close to its initial value even under the elevated-temperature condition.
One clarification is important: these figures belong to the sample tested in the 2018–2019 stability study. They should not automatically be treated as the specification for every Akita Rose Water batch produced today.
So, Do All Rose Waters Have the Same Shelf Life?
No.
That may be the most important point in this article.
Before asking:
“How long does rose water last?”
ask:
“How was this rose water made?”
Baydar describes a traditional industrial process in which rose oil is separated and the aromatic water obtained through the process is used as rose water. He also explains that rose water can spoil or turn sour if it is not properly stored and discusses methods for extending its shelf life.
Akita Non-De-Oiled Rose Water is produced differently: the rose oil is not separated from the distillate.
The Akita laboratory report then provides product-specific evidence showing the microbiological results of the tested samples under different storage conditions for up to 90 days.
These two types of rose water should therefore not be assumed to be identical simply because both are called “rose water.”
Don’t Judge Rose Water by the Words “100% Natural” Alone
The next time you buy rose water, turn the bottle around and look beyond the claims on the front.
Ask a few simple questions:
- Was the rose oil separated during production?
- How was the rose water distilled?
- What does the ingredient list actually contain?
- Does the product contain a preservative?
- Has its stability been tested?
- Can the manufacturer provide laboratory evidence?
Words such as “pure,” “natural” and “authentic” may sound reassuring, but they do not explain how the product was manufactured or how its stability was established.
If It Has No Preservative, Why Doesn't It Spoil Quickly?
This is perhaps the most interesting question.
And the answer may lie not simply in what is added to a bottle, but in how the product is made in the first place.
Traditional de-oiled rose water and a non-de-oiled whole rose distillate are produced differently. It would therefore be a mistake to assume that their composition and stability must be identical.
Akita's approach is based on keeping the rose distillate together rather than separating the rose oil and then using the remaining aromatic water.
The appropriate way to evaluate the resulting product is not through fragrance, appearance or marketing language alone.
It is through analysis.
That is why the Akita stability report is significant: it documents how the tested samples performed microbiologically and physically under several defined conditions during the 90-day stability study.
Does the 90-Day Test Mean Akita Rose Water Will Never Spoil?
No—and this distinction is important.
A 90-day stability study should not be turned into a claim that a product “never spoils.”
Nor does this report alone prove a shelf life of 10 or 15 years.
What it does show is that the tested Akita Rose Water samples maintained the reported microbiological criteria throughout the 90-day study, including under the 45°C test condition.
Longer-term shelf-life claims require appropriate longer-term evidence.
This distinction makes the scientific argument stronger, not weaker: say exactly what the data demonstrate.
The Better Question Is Not “How Long Does Rose Water Last?”
It is:
“What kind of rose water is it, and how was it produced?”
Two products may both come from Rosa damascena. Both bottles may say “rose water.” Both may even be described as natural.
But their production processes can be very different.
Prof. Dr. Hasan Baydar's work explains that traditionally produced rose water can deteriorate or become sour when it is not properly preserved and stored.
Akita's laboratory report, meanwhile, shows that the tested Non-De-Oiled Rose Water maintained the reported microbiological criteria during a 90-day stability study across different conditions, including 45°C.
So when choosing rose water, don't look only at the words printed on the front of the bottle.
Look at the rose species, the production method, whether the rose oil has been removed, the ingredient list, and, when available, the laboratory evidence.
Because two bottles can both say “Rose Water.”
But what is inside them may not be the same.
